Graduate Courses (on a regular basis)

Geochemical cycles (for earth and environmental sciences B.Sc.):
(Fall semester, 2 hours of lecture a week)

Origin, properties, abundance and classification of the elements along with some aspects of cosmochemistry. Geochemical nature and behave of elements in the Earth’s spheres. Course prerequisites are basic mineralogy, chemistry and physics.

 

Environmental Isotope Geochemistry (for geology M.Sc.):
(Fall semester, 2 hours a week)

Basic geochemistry of the Earth and its spheres. Principles of radiogenic and stable isotopes. Brief geochemistry of significant environmental isotopes. Understanding of behave of characteristic environmental isotopes (H, C, O, S, N, He, Li, B, Be, Al, Cl, Si, I, Br, Sr, Rn, Th, U) and their many-fold applications in earth and environmental sciences. Course prerequisite is basic geochemistry.

 

Petrology (for environmental science B.Sc.):
(Spring semester, 2 hours of lecture a week)

Classification, nomenclature and structural characters of igneous, metamorphic and sedimentary rocks.  Models of origin and evolution of magmas and igneous rocks.  Chemical and physical processes within the Earth’s mantle and crust.  Definition and types of metamorphism.  Mineralogical and textural change in the solid state on increase in temperature and pressure.  Formations of sedimentary rocks, combinations of chemical, physical and biological processes.  Course prerequisites are basic mineralogy, geology, chemistry, physics and biology.

 

Geochemistry (for environmental science B.Sc.):
(Spring semester, 3 hours of lecture and 1 hour of lab a week)

Origin, properties, abundance and classification of the elements along with some aspects of cosmochemistry. Geochemistry of the Earth and its spheres. Nature and behave of elements in lithosphere, hydrosphere and atmosphere. Principles of radiogenic and stable isotopes and their brief application in the environmental sciences. Course prerequisite is petrology.

 

Ph.D. Courses (on an irregular basis)

Fluids in the Earth
(Spring or Fall semester, 2 hours of lecture and 2 hours of lab a week)

This post-graduate course is for students with a deep interest in geochemistry, and petrology.  The course covers the identification and interpretation of fluid and silicate melt inclusions in rocks and minerals, from the crust to the mantle.  Additional topics are thermodynamic properties of fluids; fluid-rock interactions; solubility of volatiles in magmas; and the mantle metasomatism.  Course prerequisites are mineralogy, petrology and geochemistry.

 

Basalts and Phase Diagrams
(Fall or Spring semester, 2 hours of lecture a week)

This course is a systematic study of basalts and their phase diagrams, and their application to igneous processes in the mantle.  Also, quantitative analysis of fractional and equilibrium crystallization, and partial and equilibrium melting will be discussed.  Course prerequisites are mineralogy, petrology and geochemistry.

 

Subducted Slab and Mantle Wedge
(Fall or Spring semester, 2 hours of lecture a week)

This course focuses on consideration of the geochemical, lithological, mineralogical, thermal evolutions, mechanical states and changes, and fluid histories of the subducting slab and mantle wedge.  Particularly, the evolving slab and mantle wedge, during progressive subduction, and the processes of mineral reactions, fluid release and transport, metasomatism, deformation and melting processes leading to convergent margin magmatic and metasomatic flux will be discussed.  Course prerequisites are mineralogy, petrology and geochemistry.

 

Geochemical Cycles
(Spring or Fall semester, 2 hours of lecture a week)

The course focuses on the geochemical processes beneath and on the surface of the Earth, which drive and control cycles of chemical elements.  Each element has a characteristic geochemical cycle that reflects its particular set of geochemical properties.  The geochemical cycles of the elements have influences the environments beneath and on the surface of the Earth and have been affected by changes that have occurred in and on the Earth.  Course prerequisites are basic chemistry physics, biology and earth sciences.
